Workforce shortages and barriers to attracting and retaining employees remain a constant challenge for our rural communities. Rural Wisconsin is known for being friendly and welcoming, and offers many opportunities for new residents to find jobs and a sense of community. Immigrants from Mexico,
India, and several other nations across Asia and Africa have found a home in rural Wisconsin.

We celebrate the work being done in Lancaster to create a welcoming community for newcomers. Lancaster—population: 3,907—is the county seat of Grant County and views immigration as one solution for a declining population. Lancaster’s leaders have created a coalition called Growing Lancaster to attract residents from other countries. The project included presenting a Welcome Week to celebrate diversity and the contribution of Latino immigrants to the area.

This month, we are featuring resources and success stories that demonstrate practical ideas for communities to create an environment that makes new residents feel welcome and included in the fabric of our rural towns and villages. We also explore resources that can make our public places and civic leadership more inclusive by ensuring that all residents have access to services and opportunities, and that they can influence decisions that affect the entire community.
